When you buy folding wheelchair footplates, you’re choosing the foot-support parts of a wheelchair: the plates themselves and the swing-away or flip-up hangers that carry them. They fold, swing aside or detach so the chair can shrink for the boot and the front can clear for a transfer. Most are sold as pairs and made … Read more
Most buyers shop for a bariatric chair by staring at the seat. Width, width, width. Meanwhile the part that holds your feet gets a single line at the bottom of the spec sheet, if it gets one at all. It also quietly absorbs a surprising share of your load every time you shift forward or … Read more
Footplates are the least glamorous part of a wheelchair, right up until the moment they ruin your afternoon. A boot lid won’t close because the footrests stick out. A heel slides into the gap between two plates. A transfer turns into an obstacle course at shin height. The question of folding vs one-piece footplates sounds … Read more
Nobody daydreams about buying a footplate. It’s the part you ignore for years, right up until a crack runs across the middle, a hanger rattles over every kerb, or a foot slips off the edge at the worst possible moment. Swollen ankles have a way of making themselves known the moment you try to fold them onto a standard metal footplate. If you’ve ever watched someone wince as their foot drops onto a narrow, unforgiving strip of aluminium, you already understand why footrests for wheelchair users with oedema aren’t a nice-to-have accessory — they’re closer … Read more
Here’s a scene that plays out on driveways across Britain every single day: someone’s trying to fold a wheelchair into a car boot that was clearly designed by people who have never met a wheelchair. Elevating footrests for wheelchair frames exist to fix exactly that. Yet the listings that promise to do it are a jumble of “universal” parts, single-side sales and near-identical … Read more
Here’s a little secret the wheelchair brochures never quite admit: the part that decides whether your day runs smoothly is rarely the frame, the wheels or the upholstery. It’s the bit at the front, and the swing-away vs elevating footrests question sits right at the heart of it. Those unglamorous hangers and plates decide whether … Read more
Ask anyone who’s ever wheeled a relative into a GP appointment on a footrest that’s rattling loose, or watched a heel slip off a cracked footplate on a kerb, and they’ll tell you the same thing: this is not a part you shortcut. Finding the best wheelchair footrests isn’t really about chasing a shiny new … Read more
Anyone who’s tried to push a manual wheelchair one-handed while gripping an umbrella in the other knows exactly why this matters. Add a stiff coastal breeze or a gust funnelling between two buildings, and a flimsy umbrella doesn’t just fail to keep you dry — it can yank your arm, catch a wheel, or simply … Read more
